Who Am I

So I jumped into a concert review post pretty much immediately when I started this website, but that’s not all this page is about. The name “memories in wax” stems from my love of vinyl records and how I firmly believe ever record has three stories. The first story is the story of the album itself. This is what the artist intended to convey to you. The second is the story you interpret from the art itself. The third are the memories associated with that record when you look at it or think about it.

An example of one is my favorite Dave Brubeck album, Bossa Nova USA. It’s not lauded as a Brubeck classic by jazz fans. For most, I’m sure this will fall into the pile of “another Brubeck album”. But, to me, a case could be made that this is on my top 5 most important albums that I own on wax.

See, I met my college roommate Rob through a mutual friend, and Rob and I hit it off really well. One thing he mentioned was that he played piano. As a musician myself, I was excited, but he promptly told me he was no good at piano cause he hated reading music and all that came with it. I asked what are some piano artists he likes, because I hardly listened to music that focused on the piano. He mentioned Dave Brubeck and Billy Joel. This was in October or November of 2012.

In 2015 I got into vinyl records and found out flea markets around me had quite a few good records. When I got to the flea market, the first two two records I saw were a Billy Joel album (Stranger), and Dave Brubeck’s Bossa Nova USA. There are few moments in life I can remember picture perfect. I remember the lighting in my dorm room and the time of day when I dropped the needle on that Brubeck album and Rob and I just sat there for 20 minutes in awe of what we were listening to.

That’s what this website is for. This is for the third story, the most important story, in my opinion, of the three. This is my story.
